On January 15, Library Director Doug Koschik retired from the Baldwin Public Library after thirty years of service. To celebrate his retirement, the Baldwin Public Library Board of Directors announced the creation of a new named endowment fund honoring Koschik. With initial donations totaling $10,700, this fund is designated to provide money for building improvements to the Library in perpetuity.
The Baldwin Public Library Trust has twenty-six named endowment funds that ensure the continuing prominence of the Library by enhancing areas that complement the Library’s programs, materials, and services. The Library Board of Directors votes each May to withdraw a percentage of interest earnings from the named endowment funds to support the Library.
Library Board President Melissa Mark said, “As a lasting gift in honor of Doug’s 30 years of service to Baldwin, we are pleased to announce this new endowment fund. This fund’s proceeds will further support Baldwin Public Library’s mission by providing the residents of our participating communities with opportunities and resources to learn, connect, and discover.”
Mr. Koschik has 46 years of experience in libraries, the last 30 of which have been at Baldwin. Before being promoted to Library Director in 2010, Koschik served Baldwin as Head of Technical Services and Systems and as Associate Director of Technology/Technical Services.
During his tenure as Director, Koschik was able to reverse a serious budget deficit, add the City of Bloomfield Hills as a new contract community to Baldwin’s service area, make significant improvements to the physical building, continue and expand on Baldwin’s tradition of strong collections and outstanding programming, create a unique relationship with the Michigan Architectural Foundation which has added to our collections and programming, and see through the establishment of one of the best library makerspaces in the country.
Koschik earned a bachelor’s degree in German and a master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan, as well as an M.B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has long been active in the Michigan Library Association and the American Library Association, and from 2003 to 2017 served as an adjunct faculty member at Wayne State University’s School of Library and Information Science. He is also the Past President of the Birmingham Central Kiwanis Club and a member of the Birmingham Rotary Club.
