Proposed Youth Room Expansion & Renovation

All proceeds from Books & Bites 2017 and 2018 will benefit the upcoming expansion and renovation of the Youth Room.

Youth Room Expansion rendering

Our Youth Room is a bustling part of the Library. Each year Baldwin’s Youth Services department hosts over 570 programs for 21,000 guests.  Through programs, services, and an extensive collection of books, media, and toys, the Youth Department helps to jumpstart the literacy and early education of our youngest patrons.

BPL Youth room landscape rendering

The new Youth Room will feature the following updates:

  • Expand the Youth Room by 40%, or approximately 2,000 square feet
  • Renovate the existing space
  • Purchase new furniture
  • Increase the play area, story room, and seating
  • Make the entire area ADA-compliant, including the book shelves and the bathrooms
  • Modernize and increase the capacity of the bathrooms
  • Carry through many of the design features of the Adult Services renovation
  • Add display cases and a large aquarium, as well as a separate room for strollers
  • Expose the brick of the original 1927 building
  • Enclose the room in energy-efficient and glare-reducing glass from floor to ceiling
  • Add an outdoor children’s terrace and garden
  • Landscape the exterior to integrate it better with Shain Park and The Community House
